Duplexes are a way to maintain the feel of a single-family house but increase the density of the urban neighborhoods and make it more affordable.  Some lots are zoned for multi-family homes, and duplexes can bridge the gap between apartment complexes and smaller older houses.

The design elements are the same traditional ones used in the single-family urban infill houses, and so they have that same familiar appearance while providing for a very modern lifestyle.  Separating the entrances of the two sides and adding private separate courtyards maintains the sense of privacy afforded by single-family homes.

A recessed side entry approached through a trellis-covered walkway along the required front-load garage increases privacy, while the carriage-house doors on the garage makes the street view more intimate.
